Tran Van Thuy E-mail

His work has often proven controversial; his 1987 film The Story of Kindness or How to Behave, which dealt with the legacy of the Vietnam War and the suffering of the Vietnamese and American people in that conflict, was banned for a time by the Vietnamese government. Nonetheless, his reputation as a gifted filmmaker resulted in the Vietnamese government commissioning him a decade later to create a followup to the film, The Sound of the Violin in My Lai.

Buffalo Fighting (Vietnam) E-mail

Buffalo FightingThe preparation for this festival is very elaborate. Fighting buffaloes must be carefully selected, well fed, and trained. These buffaloes must be between 4 and 5 years old, with a good appearance, a wide chest, a big groin, a long neck, an acute bottom, and bow shaped horns. The fighting buffaloes are fed in separate cages to keep them from contact with common buffaloes.

6th of December (Greece) E-mail

6th of DecemberPolice fired teargas at rioters who threw rocks and firecrackers in central Athens as thousands gathered to mark the first anniversary of the police shooting of a teenager. Clashes broke out as about 3,000 people, mostly students, anarchists and leftists, began a march to parliament. More protests were expected tomorrow. An evening memorial service was planned in the Exarchia district, where 15-year-old Alexandros Grigoropoulos was shot dead.

Colour Landscapes: Black (Greece) E-mail

Black LandscapesA change of direction with these landscapes. I've mixed pictures taken around central Athens and Palini just outside of the city. Last summer forest fires took Greece by storm yet again. A lot of Greek people who I've met said that the fires were started on purpose. Palini was one of the areas hit by these "accidental fires". There is a colour that runs through all the pictures and it is of course black.

Wat Tourists E-mail

Angkor WatSiam Reap, reaps of temples and tourists. As you walk into Angkor Wat you are challenged by young kind faces asking if you'd like to buy water, books on Cambodian temples, and post cards. Waves of Japanese, Europeans and other nationalities I've never heard of walk the long path way to the temple. The sun was melting. The temple was melting. The tourists were melting. I wiped the sweat from my eyes. As I tried to take a picture the image filled with water.

What's Your Name E-mail

What's My NameLao Buddhist are very devout and almost every Lao man joins a monastery, or temple, for at least a short period of time. Many men also become monks for the rest of their lives. Most people donate food to the monks to gain merit and improve their karma. The temples of Laos were once seen as "Universities" for monks. Lao monks are highly respected and revered in Lao communities.

Life On Water E-mail

Water PuppetryModern water puppetry is performed in a pool of water with the water's surface as the stage. The puppeteers stand behind a screen and control the puppets using long bamboo rods and string mechanisms hidden underwater.  The puppets are carved out of wood and often weigh up to 15 kg.  A traditional Vietnamese orchestra provides background music accompaniment.  Singers of Cheo, a form of opera originating in northern Vietnam, sing songs that tell the story acted out by the puppets

Hanoi FloodsHeavy rain in November 2008 left Hanoi under water. Most of the lakes came out of their beds and young men were fishing in the streets. Harvest in Sapa E-mail

Harvest In Sapa The paddy fields were very green and brown which indicated that the rice was ready for harvesting. All around small clusters of people could be seen in the fields cutting, talking, laughing, working, sleeping and working out the shaft from the rice. A young H’mong woman looked on as another let the rice fall gracefully to the plastic sheet that had covered the ground where the rice was falling. The wind took the shaft away as if it was taking food for itself.

Mission: Vietnam Landscapes 2 E-mail

Vietnam Landscapes 2 Here is the second of my series of landscapes around Vietnam. Again, I am trying to find the very ordinary and blend it into the countryside. Some of them were taken while I was on my bike. For me, a landscape is like filling empty space with life. It is like the camera has a transparent canvas when you look through the viewfinder, and the user has to fill that space, a bit like a painter.
